Canute Esports team succeeds at State Championship

Congratulations are in order for Canute Junior High (JH) for their achievements at the Junior High Oklahoma Scholastic Electronic Sports (Esports) State Championship on Saturday, March 5.

Esports takes video gaming to another level with organized competitive gameplay between two teams, controlled by its own strict set of rules and guidelines.

Esports requires skill, teamwork, communication, critical and strategic thinking, creativity, sportsmanship, and leadership; much like an athletic sporting event.

Canute students won three JH State Championships in Rocket League Duos, Paladins, and Madden, three JH State Runner Ups in Rocket League Trios, Fortnite, and Super Smash Brothers. Four out of five JH MVP Awards were presented as well.

JH State Championship winners are Vince Drinnon and Julio Montoya in Rocket League Duos, Conagher Hardaway, Landon McKinley, Brance Pitzer, Aiden Smith, and Slade Thrasher in Paladins, and Zeke Snowder in Madden. JH State Runner Ups are Noah Thompson, Landon McKinley, Slade Thrasher in Rocket League Trios, Landon McKinley, Julio Montoya, Vince Drinnon, Zeke Snowder in Fortnite, and Noah Jarnagin in Super Smash Brothers.

JH MVP Awardees are Julio Montoya in Rocket League Duos, Zeke Snowder in Madden, Landon Mckinley in Fortnite, and Conagher Hardaway in Super Smash Brothers.

Esports has become an official sanctioned high school sport, ultimately changing what it means to be a student-athlete. Canute High School Esports qualified in five out of six games and will compete in the State Tournament on April 1.
