CHAMBER CHAT

Notes from the Cordell Chamber of Commerce

This year marks the 34th annual Cordell Pumpkin Festival. Starting in 1987 this event has brought fun and excitement to the young and old. What is your favorite part about the Pumpkin Festival? Is it the time you shared a funnel cake on the courthouse steps with a boy you liked or was it putting your truck in the burnout to see if you could blow a tire? Whatever it was, everyone has a story about the pumpkin festival.

In the past there have been all kinds of events during the Festival. A few times there was a goblin parade, where kids would dress up for a costume contest and walk around the square. Then there were the years where there was a small pumpkin patch under the tree on the courthouse lawn. And of course, who could forget the Famous Bed Races. Teams of 5 would make a bed roll down the street with one person in the bed, that person would get out, go into an outhouse, get dressed in big old clothing, and jump back into the bed to be pushed to the end for the win. All of these were so much fun for the citizens, school kids, businesses, and out of towners to enjoy.

As the years went out, the pumpkin festival would change a little, adding and taking away events but keeping the heart of the event alive. On Oct. 9th things might look different then they did back then, but the chamber hopes you can still make new memories this year. With the Pumpkin Pancake Breakfast, Baking Contest, the parade, vendors, car show, and so, so, so much more there should be something for everyone.

For 34 years the pumpkin festival has been a great place to enjoy the day with friends and family and this year is no exception. Come be a part of the Historical 34th Annual Cordell Pumpkin Festival Oct 9th from 9-3 on the Cordell Square.
