On the week of September 7, 2011, The Cordell City Council announced that they were set to vote on airport runway lighting, the purchase of vehicles, and more, in an upcoming meeting.

Justin D. Haynes, 26, Canute, was injured Wednesday, August 31, in a one vehicle accident which occurred eight miles south and five miles east of Hammon, Oklahoma.

Cordell firefighters were among those from Washita County who formed a task force and traveled to the Wichita Wildlife Preserve to help fight a fire that burned 50 square miles, approximately 33,000 acres. At press time on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, the fire was still burning.

The Cordell Fire Department, Police Department, and Cordell Beacon announced their new presence on Twitter, a social media application.

The Cordell Lady Blue Devil Softball Team took second place in the Shortgrass Conference Tournament.

The Washita County Free Fair Hall of Fame inducted new members. Recipients were Leo and Sherri Goeringer of Bessie; Dale Maddox and Joe Maddox of MX Livestock, Cordell; and Dirk Webb of Cordell.

The Blue Devil Football team won their season opener with a 24 to 22 win over long time rival Burns Flat/Dill City.

On the week of September 5, 2001, the Washita County Fair began, boasting doubled premiums in some competition categories, special market animal sponsors, and special entertainment.

A sudden jump in fuel prices hurt local farmers, who were preparing to plant wheat and harvest fall crops.

Cordell’s very own Phil Kliewer was a finalist in the running for the Oklahoma Mayor of the Year Award, sponsored by the Oklahoma Conference of Mayors.

The Cordell Elementary celebrated the beginning of the new school year with a “Back to School” carnival. The carnival featured various games, a face painting station, temporary tattoos, and more.

Main Street of Cordell hosted their second annual “Upstairs, Downstairs, and All Around the Square” event - an evening of progressive desserts and tours of three of Cordell’s historic second stories.

The price of wheat given by The Farmers Cooperative Association of Bessie was $2.76.

The Cordell Football team looked forward to their hometown debut on September 7, 2001.

40 years ago

On the week of September 2, 1981, the Cordell Branch of Farmers National Bank announced proudly that employees, Ken Wesner, Raymond Wesner, and Emma Jo Stafford, had 90 years of service between them. The trio had the most years of service among other bank staff.

Nina Night retired after 22 years of faithful service to the Cordell Chamber of Commerce. She was the secretary manager of the chamber.

The Washita County Free Fair began, boasting live entertainment, livestock shows, a pet parade, and much more.

The annual Cheyenne-Arapaho Pow Wow was scheduled, with nightly war dances, food concessions, arts and crafts, and gourd dancing.

Three new production wells were completed, with a fourth in the process of being finaled.

The price of wheat, given by the Producer’s Grain Inc. of Cordell was $3.77 a bushel, unchanged from the day before, but down two cents from the week prior.

Schools along with many businesses prepared to close for labor day.

The 13th annual Cordell Art Festival was deemed “a total success” by Chamber of Commerce officials. The top prizes of $50 each went to Susan Jones of Chickasha and John Tracy of Mt. View.
