City’s goal is to preserve historic bridge

The colorful pedestrian bridge at Cordell City Park, long recognized for its nostalgic shades of red, yellow, and green, has been removed from its original location for safety reasons.

City crews recently removed the aging structure and cleaned the area to ensure visitor safety. The bridge has been a familiar landmark for generations.

Mayor Phil Kliewer said the city aims to preserve the historical integrity of the bridge, which was constructed in the 1930s through the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The federal program provided paid jobs to unemployed Americans during the Great Depression and funded numerous public works projects across the country.

While plans for the bridge’s future are underway, it currently sits off to the side of its original location. Parkgoers are encouraged not to enter or climb on the structure until further notice.

City officials will share updates as decisions are made regarding restoration and potential reinstallation of the historic bridge.
