November is recognized as National Family Caregivers Month, a time to honor and celebrate the dedication of those who selflessly care for their loved ones. At the South Western Oklahoma Development Authority (SWODA) Area Agency on Aging (AAA), caregivers are celebrated every day—but November offers a special opportunity to raise awareness of their invaluable role and the challenges they face.
“Caregivers provide an incredible service to their loved ones and our communities,” said Joanie Franks with SWODA AAA. “We want caregivers to know they are not alone in their journey.”
In partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, Aging Services Division, SWODA AAA provides respite services to assist family caregivers. The term respite simply means taking a break. Studies show that caregivers who take time to rest and recharge experience lower stress, improved health, and are better able to provide quality care.
Respite services give caregivers the opportunity to step away from their responsibilities—whether to attend a medical appointment, visit friends, enjoy a movie, or simply take time for themselves.
To apply for respite services, caregivers may contact Joanie Franks with SWODA AAA at 1-800-627-4882, ext. 126, or directly at 580-562-5026. These services are funded in part by state and Older Americans Act funds through SWODA AAA and Oklahoma Human Services Aging Services. It is the policy of SWODA AAA to serve all individuals who are eligible for its programs without regard to race, national origin, ancestry, color, religion, gender, age, or disability.
SWODA is one of eleven Councils of Government in the state, serving municipalities, counties, and conservation districts in Beckham, Custer, Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Kiowa, Roger Mills, and Washita counties.
