A burglary at the Rexall Drug Store in Cordell early Friday morning, April 12, 1968, resulted in the theft of a quantity of narcotics, according to a report by City Marshal Eby Don Walters.
Night Chief of Police Omer Smith discovered signs of a break-in while making his rounds at approximately 1:45 a.m. Smith found the lock broken from the service window at the rear of the building, with the window slightly raised.
After checking the front and side doors, finding them secure at that time, Smith continued his patrol. Upon returning around 3:00 a.m., he discovered that a west-side door was now standing open.
Smith alerted fellow officer Coy Ed Piercey, who contacted Sam Arnold, Jr., while City Marshal Walters notified Washita County Sheriff Clifford Hines. Officers from both the city and county responded to investigate.
Authorities reported that the window lock on the south side had been pried open using a jack handle and lug wrench. Assisting in the investigation were Undersheriff Dave Dobbs and Deputy Sheriff O.C. Peek.
