National Defense given by Phyllis Stevenson: The article is taken from the National Defender on Pearl Harbor. Reviewing the history and fate of the USS Arizona and USS Utah on 7 December 1941. Few are aware that these two battleships are the only ones that remain where they sank in Pearl Harbor, a lasting tribute to the brave men who fought to the end.
Of the Sailors and Marines onboard the USS Arizona, 900 were not recovered and 334 survived. The USS Utah lost 60 with only 2 being recovered and 461 surviving. Those who did survive and served onboard these two ships have the right to have their cremains interred with their shipmates upon their passing.
The Navy began interring the deceased Pearl Harbor survivors on their old ships in 1942, with the final one in 2019. The USS Utah had 3 interments, the USS Arizona had 44 interments. The survivors for both were with full military honors. The two remaining survivors from the Arizona plan to be laid to rest with their families.
Survivors from other ships can have their ashes scattered over Pearl Harbor. Scuba divers place the urns of the deceased in the well of barbette number four on the Arizona. On Dec. 6 2019 the final burial took place. In accordance with full military honors, at the close of the day, a rifle salute echoed across the silent harbor as the sound of taps carried the sailor to his final resting place.
After the business was conducted, the group worked on yearly reports.
The group closed the meeting with the Daughter’s pledge.
