“The nomination of the Pioneer Woman of Oklahoma was made in 1955 for the first time in the history of the State. This honor went to Ollie Magdalene Butler who at the age of eighty-three years has lived for sixty-three years in Dewey County, Oklahoma. She came here as a young woman with her husband, Frank Butler, and their two small sons, making their home near Taloga where Mr. Butler had staked a land claim at the opening of the Cheyenne and Arapaho country in the run on April 19,1892. Mrs. Butler today counts nine children of her own, twenty-five grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren. “

The selection of the Pioneer Woman of Oklahoma in 1955 was made through a statewide contest in charge of a Central Committee headed by Mrs. Martha Meis Aaron, of Oklahoma City.

Three broad qualifications of the candidate were that she could not have been born in the state of Oklahoma, and must have accomplished something in pioneering that present day women are not called upon to do; she should be a married woman, preferable a mother whose children are an honor and credit to her; she should be a woman of deep religious conviction, who had given outstanding service to her community. Thirty-eight counties nominated candidates who qualified and whose records were reviewed by a committee. (Chronicles of Oklahoma)

The following are remarks made at the “Woman in American History” Award by Connie Coonrad Tate, OSDAR State American History Committee Chair . “Women for this recognition are chosen by taking into consideration whether or not they have made a contribution or a difference in their communities.. She could be a historical entity or currently alive and worthy of recognition. ………they can inspire us and give us courage to realize our own potential. It took courage to come from Kansas in a wagon with her husband, two small sons and their every earthly possession to settle in the newly opened Cheyenne-Arapaho country in November of 1892.

In a time and place where neighbors and friends were there for each other in times of need…Mrs. Butler made many visits day and night to care for the sick, help bring new babies into the world, as well as assist with the burying of the dead. She had stayed busy at home helping in the growing of crops, herding cattle, cooking for family and harvest crews , prairie fires and always tending to her family but being thankful for her blessings that God had given her. With this courage….she moved forward with strength throughout her life and left a legacy not to be forgotten.

As the DAR State American History Committee Chair, it is my absolute pleasure to add Ollie Magdalene Butler who so wonderfully demonstrated the spirit and fortitude of Pioneer Women everywhere, to the DAR Outstanding Women in American History Honor Roll and database at DAR Headquarters in Washington D.C.”
