Some might describe me as a bit over-enthusiastic about a lot of things. Actually, some might just describe me as loud and annoying - but those aren’t my people.
My people are the ones who will listen to me go on and on about the many subjects I am passionate about. My kids, Harry Potter, the Big Hair rock of the 80’s, my cat Mittens, and a whole host of other things that I get excited to talk about.
One of my favorite things to talk about is CORDELL! I love telling people my story about how I came to live in Cordell, how much I appreciate this wonderful little town and its people.
Cordell has really made a difference in my life. I came here from the big city of San Antonio, Texas. Life changes forced me to leave there but it has been the best thing that could have happened to my son and I.
From the moment we arrived we were treated kindly. Everyone we encountered welcomed us and offered advice and help with anything we needed to know about our new hometown.
My son thrives as a Blue Devil. He has been blessed to have the very best teachers here who have taught him so much more than to read and add and subract. They really care about what kind of human he is becoming, not just how smart he is. I am thankful to leave him in good hands every morning during the school year. I don’t think I could have ever felt that confident in San Antonio.
Something I came to care about very much soon after our arrival in Cordell was our movie theater. I tell complete strangers all about it and how fun it is. When family visits from out of town a movie trip is a priority. We are so lucky to have something like that here!
I recently encountered a couple who came into the Beacon office and told me they just moved to town and wanted a subscription. They were stuck with me for half an hour as I told them all about Cordell. Luckily they were also the enthusiastic type and seemed to enjoy my ‘selling Cordell’ speech. I asked them why they chose Cordell, and they said “Everyone is just so NICE.” It is wonderful to hear that newcomers feel that vibe from our community.
Now, the very best thing about being here: Somehow I ended up with the most amazing job! I applied at the paper thinking it was a temporary thing until I found something more in my skill set of accounting and business management and now, three years later, I am here with you as Editor of Washita County’s Hometown Newspaper Since 1897. I still get a thrill thinking about it! I never knew I had ink in my blood until I found myself in this position.
You, dear readers, are so important to me. I want to hear from you. I want to know what you want to see in the paper. I want to know what interests you. I want to see photos of your kids and your grandkids and your pets and all the things that make you happy.
Unfortunately, the news is not happy news all the time - but whenever possible I want the Cordell Beacon to be a source of a feeling of comaraderie between neighbors. Until you have lived in a big city you don’t realize how fortunate folks are that can live in a small town. We look out for each other for the most part. We keep each other safe.
Stop by the Beacon and visit with me. Email me your story ideas at editor@cordellbeacon.com. This is your paper. I want to hear from you!
