Cordell Soccer Opens Season With 6-0 Win

As winter sports ended their seasons, the Cordell Lady Blue Devils’ soccer team was hard at work, defeating Altus JV 6-0 in the season opener Tuesday, March 11. Layne Balzer and Crimson Zanghi led the scoring with two goals a piece. Brooke Fletcher and Kaitlyn Kuehne both scored once. Head coach Darrin Taylor was more interested in the team’s future than how they performed in their season opener, saying, “They played well, but they are definitely going to get better.” The team will have their next opportunity to improve Monday, March 24, with a match against Bridge Creek. The match will be in Cordell at 6:00 p.m. The Junior High boys and girls teams, meanwhile, will start their season Tuesday, March 25, at Weatherford.

As head coach Jake Wiederstein said, “For a group of boys playing in their first competitive tournament, it went exactly as should be expected.” Though Cordell was the least experienced team at the 14-team tournament, the Blue Devils played well, placing sixth as a team.

Blue Devils Cinderella Run Ends With Loss To Christian Heritage

A look at the Cordell Blue Devils’ final 13-15 record does not do this team’s resiliency justice. Even the Blue Devil’s final standing as District champions, Regional Consolation champions and Area participants does not give the team its proper due. The best way to look at this season for the Blue Devils is as a season of growth, in which they consistently played taller and more athletic teams and still fought to the finish.
