Shooting And Bomb Threat Still Under Investigation

Anxious minutes passed Thursday, January 15, 2015, as reports of a bomb threat and shooting in Sentinel circulated throughout Washita County and across the state. According to reports by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), the Washita County Sheriff’s Department requested OSBI investigative assistance on Thursday morningabout 6 a.m. The request came after Sentinel Police Chief Louis Ross was shot when he and two Washita County deputies entered the home of a bomb threat suspect.

Cordell Council Discusses Purchase/Appraisal Of Property

Because of the holiday on Monday, January 19, the Cordell City Council meeting was held on Tuesday, January 20, 2015. The agenda called for reports from the mayor, city administrator, and grants office, receipt of a sales and use tax comparison report, and an update on the golf course from Jerry Burrows. Also on the agenda was an executive session to discuss the purchase or appraisal of real property.

Sentinel Police Chief Shot

The front of the house where two suspects were taken into custody following an alleged bomb threat. Sentinel Police Chief Lewis Ross was reportedly shot while in the house investigating the alleged threat.

Multiple gun shots rang out in a residential area of Sentinel about 5:30 a.m. Thursday, January 15, 2015.
Sentinel Police Chief Lewis Ross reportedly suffered gun shot wounds to his arm and chest, but, according to his brother-in-law Ron Putman of Cordell, is expected to recover.
Ross was transported to the Hobart Hospital then medi-flighted on to a hospital in Oklahoma City.
“Thank goodness he was wearing his protective vest,” Putman said.
Ross was reportedly responding to an alleged bomb threat called in against the Sentinel Head Start, located in the Community Action Development Corporation building located at 221 South Seventh in Sentinel.
The alleged suspects in the threat and shooting are Dallas Horton and Marie (Clements) Horton, thought to be in their late 20s or early 30s. Both are reportedly being held in the Washita County Jail.

The Lutheran Campus Ministry at SWOSU is pleased to welcome Pastor Carol Waters as our new campus minister! In addition to her new role as campus minister, Carol will continue to serve as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Clinton, where she has been for the last 13 years. When asked about her new role, Carol said, “I’m thrilled to be able to serve the students at SWOSU. I’m looking forward to building relationships with students and to help them as they grow into their own faith and find ways to express their love for God in Christ by serving others.”

Washita Refuge And Foss State Park To Host Wildlife Tour

Washita National Wildlife Refuge and Foss State Park are partnering to host the annual Wildlife Tour on Saturday, January 10th, 2015. This free tour begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Foss State Park headquarters located at the south end of Foss Dam. An accessible tour bus will shuttle visitors around the Refuge and State Park in search of eagles and other wildlife, wrapping up with bison viewing and free lunch.

Year End Shooting Leaves One Dead

About 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, the Washita County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting an accidental shooting. Location of the incident was 1.5 miles north of Dill City in Washita County.
