Winners in the annual Cordell Beacon New Year Art

Winners in the annual Cordell Beacon New Year Art Contest were announced Monday, January 11, 2016. Taking home the $25 first place prize was Matt Haywood, far right. Tony Ferrero was awarded the $15 second place prize, and Hanna Williams, far left, and Abby Brown were each awarded the $10 third place prize.

The Cordell Academic Team

The Cordell Academic Team, comprised of Jesse Bridges, Zane Hendricks, Alec Pankhurst, Naomi Southerland, Macey Taylor and Tyler Wedel, are among the top academic teams in the state. During the 2015-16 school year these students have traveled to academic meets and recently placed first in both District and Regional competitions under their coach, Mrs. Monika Belt. The Cordell team also has a top eight individual conference finisher, Alec Pankhurst, and a top 20 individual conference finisher, Jesse Bridges. From extensive studying of art, literature, history, science and mathematics, to studying sports and pop culture, these students have excelled academically and are representing Cordell High School in the upcoming Area Tournament, which will be held in Dale, Oklahoma, on Saturday, January 16.

Corn Bible Academy All Area Honor Band

Six Corn Bible Academy students will be representing the school on January 8 and 9 when they will participate in the All Area Honor Band clinic and concert in Fairview, Oklahoma. Playing in the high school Honor Band will be Senior Levi McAbee, third chair Alto Sax; Senior Hanna Hays, seventh chair trombone; Junior Carter Smith, first chair Tenor Sax; Sophomore Cody Schmidt, fourth chair bass clarinet; and Freshman Brittan Newton, sixth chair clarinet. eighth grader Kaylee Hunnicut, seventh chair trombone, will also represent CBA in the junior high Honor Band.

Council Approves EMS Pay Schedule

A loss of electricity due to at least two underground explosions moved the first 2016 Cordell City Council meeting to the Precinct Room on Monday, January 4. The hour and ten minute meeting include a 20-minute Executive Session to discuss the pay schedule for Emergency Medical Services personnel.

Cordell Memorial Clinic Adds Telemedicine Specialties

More specialists are coming to Cordell. Last year Cordell Memorial Hospital partnered with St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City and began the state’s first telehospitalist program. Using cameras and monitors, this program allows a patient in a Cordell hospital bed to consult with a specialist in Oklahoma City called a hospitalist.

Explosions Disrupt Electric Service To Downtown Businesses, Courthouse

After escaping the most recent round of nasty weather with uninterrupted electric service, the Washita County Courthouse and businesses in the block immediately north of the Courthouse went dark Monday afternoon after two explosions and a brief-duration fire sent residents into the street to see what happened.

By Monday afternoon, the  water situation in Cordell was becoming tense, and by Tuesday morning was described as an emergency situation by Cordell City Administer J.C. Moser.

Heavy ice mixed with snow

Heavy ice mixed with snow proved too much for part of the canopy over the pumps at Right Here/Subway in Cordell. Going down with more a whimper than a bang about 2 p.m. on Monday, December 28, employees at Right Here were unaware of the sagging canopy until alerted by a customer

The Cordell City Employee of the Month for January 2016

The Cordell City Employee of the Month for January 2016 is Fire Chief Seth Slaughterback. Seth grew up in Cordell and attended school here. He married Cheri right after the Pumpkin Festival in 2003. Seth is devoted to his wife and daughter, Bailey, and when asked about his family Seth’s immediate response was, “My family is the greatest gift I could ever ask for.” Seth is also an EMT volunteer in Cordell. When asked what he likes to do in his spare time, Seth said, “What spare time” I stay busy with my work and beautiful family.”

Foss State Park Prepares For First Day Hike And Trail Ride

January 1, 2013, marked the first time the First Day Hike was held at Foss State Park, an event held in state parks throughout the United States on the first day of January each year. The January 1, 2016, hike is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Participants should gather at the Foss State Park office by 8:45 a.m. for the 2.65 mile hike rated as “easy” and suitable for children, at the discretion of their parents.
