Burns Flat Resident Arrested For Rape

Thomas Edward Martinez Jr. of Burns Flat has been arrested on five counts of rape in the second degree. Washita County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Joe Janz investigated the case and prepared the Affidavit for Arrest. Per the affidavit, Janz and Deputy Russell Stewart met with Shirley Walker, Kelci Martinez, Kayla Hodges and a 14 year old juvenile, called K.P. in the affidavit, at the Washita County Justice7 Center on April 29, 2014.

Work on the Washita County Courthouse

Work on the Washita County Courthouse continues, with these photos taken May 1, 2014. Concerns over the duct work which obstructs the view into and out of the windows has been expressed by several residents. (See the Letter to the Editor inside.) The exterior steps on both the east and west sides have been removed, and work is continuing on the exterior brick.

No Burning Allowed

Some rain may be in the forecast for Washita County this week, but it will take feet of rain, not inches, to break the drought that has now been declared “Extreme” in this part of the state. Record-breaking heat, high winds and low humidity have combined to turn western Oklahoma in to a tinder box, where one careless act could set the entire County ablaze.

Cordell Resident Arrested For Rape

Kevin Low of 400 East 14th Street, Apartment 106, Cordell, has been arrested and charged with second degree rape. The original charges were first degree rape by instrumentation and domestic abuse in the presence of a child.

4-H Meat Judging Team Takes First And Second

The Washita County Junior 4-H Meat Judging Team was in Stillwater recently to attend a state wide competition at Oklahoma State University (OSU). Keith Schneberger, an OSU Animal Science graduate and owner of Keith’s Butcher Shop,coached the team. The team judged meat carcasses and retail meat cuts based on quality of the product and cut ability.

Dixon Receives Superior Rating At State Contest

Kylse Dixon, a senior at Cordell High School, received a Superior rating at the State Solo/Ensemble Contest held in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on April 23, 2014. She qualified for the State contest when she received a Superior rating at the District Solo/Ensemble Contest at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) on February 22, 2014.

Suspect Arrested In Car Theft Case

New developments have arisen in the car theft case that shocked Cordell, as Candy Rogers’ car has been recovered and a suspect, Terry Franklin Clark, has been arrested in conjunction with the case. Just before midnight Wednesday, April 23, Oklahoma Police Department Officer Matthew Guy noticed a vehicle cross Robinson Street on Southwest 41st Street in Oklahoma City, traveling west. The officer ran a search on the license plate number, discovering the car was registered as stolen.

Car Theft, Break In Stun Cordell

Cordell was hit by two major crimes in one day Thursday, April 17, as a local resident’s car was stolen and a local home was burglarized. Candy Rogers, an employee at Dr. Randy Abernathy’s Clinic at 1200 North Glenn English, noticed her keys were missing from her office around 5:30 p.m. that day. She then saw her vehicle was also missing.

Three Cordell Students Win State Speech Championships

On April 10, 2014, members of the Cordell Speech and Debate team traveled to Norman to begin competition at the State Tournament. After three days of performances, three students were named as State Champions. Sarah Southerland won the title of Champion with her Original Oratory.
