Last month, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) implemented a temporary extension for commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders who have been downgraded due to failure to timely submit an updated medical examiner certificate or complete a self-certification form. New federal requirements have complicated this process considerably, and state officials are working to fix the problem. The DPS extension allows applicants to reverse the downgrade of their license, and extends the deadline for completing all requirements until December 31, 2014. While I’m grateful to DPS for finding an alternative for drivers as they work to provide all necessary information, we need to find a solution to the problem.
