Lavern Jones, 81, resident of Cordell, Oklahoma, was born on January 10, 1933, in Washita County, Oklahoma, to Ernest and Willa (Franklin) Jones, and passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014, in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Lavern was born in Washita County and attended school in Cloud Chief. He graduated from Cordell High School in 1949. Lavern married Glenna Cothrum on September 28, 1953. They raised their family in Cordell. Lavern had worked for Washita County District #2 for many years, retiring in 2014. He was an avid horseman and enjoyed team roping. Lavern also trained racehorses and cutting horses and was a longtime member of the Cordell Roundup Club, the AQHA and the NRA. He enjoyed reading Louis L’amour westerns and watching westerns. Lavern loved playing cards, going to rodeos and joking with friends. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, and his friends. Lavern was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Willa Jones, two sisters and two brothers. Survivors include his wife: Glenna Jones of the home; one daughter: Rhonda Gossen and husband, Kervin, of Weatherford, Oklahoma; one grandson: Jarod Lundy and wife, Noel; two step-grandchildren: Cameron Gossen and wife Sh’Ree and Kelly Waters and husband, Brandon; one adopted grandson: Brandon Asberry and wife, Damali; four step-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held for Laverne Jones at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 6, 2014, at the Washita County Activity Center, Cordell, Oklahoma, with Ronnie McKee, officiating and Jarod Lundy and Van Carter, assisting. Burial will follow in the Lawnview Cemetery, Cordell, Oklahoma, under the direction of Musick-Varner Funeral Home, Cordell, Oklahoma.
