Jonah “Joe” Foster

Joe Foster was born June 29, 1924, to Jonah Foster and Alice (Harris) Foster and departed this life February 28, 2014, at Bell Avenue Nursing home in Elk City, Oklahoma, after a brief illness at the age of 89 years, seven months, and 29 days. When Joe was a young boy his family moved to Gotebo and then Lake Valley. Joe picked cotton and attended Lake Valley school. As an adult, he worked as a driller, spending many years in Bakersfield, California, and Liberal, Kansas, and many other western states. Joe loved rodeos, horses, and was known to throw some dice, and play a sharp game of poker. Western swing dance was one of his favorite activities, and how he met his late life companion, Lela Bounds. For 14 years, you could find Joe and Lela, dressed to match, at dances in Cooperton, Elk City, and throughout western Oklahoma. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jonah and Alice Foster, brothers and sisters John, Ann, Nan, Creed, Reed, Floyd, Clyde, and Fannie. Survivors include his wife, Lela Bounds, of the home, sister Pearl Brence and husband B.L. of Lawton, Oklahoma, and many nephews, great nephew and nieces. Funeral services will be at People’s Cooperative Funeral Home Chapel in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma, on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at 2:00 p.m.,with Ann Hines officiating, under the direction of People’s Cooperative Funeral Home, Lone Wolf, Oklahoma.
