Western Oklahoma has been blessed with abundant natural resources, and local business has taken advantage. Washita County’s unemployment rate is just 3.8 percent according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is 43 percent lower than the national average. Part of the reason for the strong employment numbers in the state is a high percentage of the work force that works government jobs. Oklahoma had 351,700 government jobs as of December, 2013, which was 19% of the entire labor force. According to City-Data.org, 21 percent of Washita County workers are employed by the government.
